About Oak Park Flower Farm

From Cayucos to Oak Park

The Oak Park Flower Farm was started on Valentine’s Day, 2010. It is located just outside Arroyo Grande, approximately 2.7 miles inland from the Pismo Beach pier. The soil is sandy and the land is sloped to the south. The elevation and distance from the coast assure warm fog-free days with cooling breezes most afternoons.

The farm is operated as a sole proprietorship by Malcolm McEwen. He got his start growing flowers commercially in Cayucos, approximately 25 mile up the coast. His flower growing guru in Cayucos was Vernon Lawson.

Vern kept a small vacation home across the street and every year would fill his front yard with dahlias. He generously donated a few tubers to Malcolm and within a few years, what with divisions and new additions from mail-order sources, Malcolm’s dahlia garden covered half of the vacant lot next door. Eventually, he moved his operation a few miles out of town. (See the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG2juM6eSSU)

For several years Malcolm grew dahlias and sold them from a roadside stand, later expanding to farmer’s markets. He also supplied flowers to vacation rental businesses in Cayucos. He recalls that “It was nice to know that a vase of my fresh-cut dahlias helped to welcome so many people to their vacation at the beach.”

Now that he has relocated to the Arroyo Grande/Pismo Beach area, he is expanding his offerings, and hopes that you will enjoy using his flowers as much as he does growing them.
